Monday is Labor day and school is closed. Enjoy your long weekend...
Tuesday in 6th grade math we will be covering how to model division of fractions using picture models. Students will be expected to go home and study this material as there will be a quiz on Wednesday... Wednesday students will be taking their mini quiz covering dividing fractions and fraction models. Students will have the opportunity evaluate quizzes and retake the quiz after they note misconceptions at the end of class. Thursday students will be learning how to find the LCM of a number. They should also be able to apply this in a real world context. Students will take any unfinished activities home to finish for homework. Friday students will be using multiple methods to find the GCF of a number set. They should be able to find the GCF of any numbers from 1 to 99. Any unfinished work will be taken home for homework. In 6th grade math this week:
Monday students will be working on the decimals performance task titles "Debits and Credits". How can I use a ledger to help me balance my check book. This is an important activity as performance tasks count as 25% of a students grade. Unfinished tasks will be taken home for students to finish. On Tuesday students will review how to change mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa. This is a review day and students should already have prior knowledge. It would be a great idea for students to review this before class and preview how to divide fractions. Wednesday is an early release day, however students will be learning how to divide fractions by fractions. Unfinished classwork will be taken home to complete. Thursday students will be taking dividing fractions to another level. Today we will be learning how to divide fractions and mixed numbers using the standard algorithm. Unfinished classwork will be taken home to complete. Friday is our fraction modeling day. Today we will learn how to use picture models to demonstrate how fractions are divided. In 6th grade Math this week we will be beginning the week finishing up our decimal operations. On Monday we will be working on dividing decimals by decimals (dividend and divisors have decimals).
Tuesday students will need to be ready for their division mini quiz. Students will need to know how to divide whole numbers and decimals. Students will be allowed to reassess on Wednesday if they did not perform well. Students will also begin working on their Unit 1A performance task called "debits and credits". This is a HIGHLY important assignment and any unfinished work will be taken home and expected to be completed. Thursday students will be working on preparing for their first unit test. Students will be working on study guides for all of their decimal operations. Friday is test day. Be prepared for testing on all decimal operations. Good Luck!!! In 6th grade math this week the focus is going to be on how to do long division using the standard algorithms.
On Monday and Tuesday of this week we will be learning how to use the basic algorithm for long division. Monday will be a practice day and students will be expected to go home and study. Tuesday will be a day for you to show us what you have learned. Students will take home a practice activity to complete. On Wednesday students will begin to look at how to apply long division concepts to problems where the dividend has a decimal while the divisor is a whole number. Students will be expected to finish all practice work at home and study for Thursday’s quiz. On Thursday students will take their first quiz of the year. This quiz will cover all concepts discussed this year involving decimals. Friday we will be giving students who did not perform well on the quiz to receive extra support and retake their decimals operations quiz. Students who did perform well will be working on an extension activity to further their understanding of decimals. Here is a video to use as a preview: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=long+division&&view=detail&mid=8447B87430A1725F7FA88447B87430A1725F7FA8&&FORM=VRDGAR Students received their tests back today in class. If you would like to retake your test, you may do so before school during my tutoring hours. This week and next week you may come in on Wednesday at 8. Please have your parents drop you off at the bus depot. I will meet everyone there at 8. I will have your test ready to make corrections.
I hope everyone had a wonderful "winter" break even though it did not feel much like winter outside! I just wanted to update everyone on what all is going on in our class. Like I already stated, we are only 5 school weeks away from the Milestones test taking place and we have A LOT to cover over that time period. Sixth grade will be finishing up their Geometry unit this week and will begin their Statistics unit next week. Seventh grade is beginning their Statistics unit this week and will test over it at the end of next week. It is important that you are at school every day so that you do not get behind in you school work. If you do miss a day, please check with me to see how you should make up that work. Also, if you feel as though you are getting behind, make sure you come to tutoring for extra help. I am here Wednesday mornings at 8 am for sixth graders and Thursday mornings for 7th graders. Please let me know the day before tutoring if you plan to attend so that I can write you a pass to come to my room. Finally, the third grading period officially ends on March 14th. Make sure you are completing any missing work that you may have for my class. Check with me if you ever have any questions.
Well the first half of the school year is done! That is so hard to believe. If your student has not informed you by now, I wanted to make an announcement on here. My husband and I are expecting our first child at the end of March! Therefore, this quarter will be crucial to your student's learning. My due date is right before we get out for Spring Break, so the goal is to finish all curriculum that will be included on the Milestone test by that time. Here is what we will be doing within each grade level over the next couple of weeks. Sixth graders will be finishing up their equations unit this month. We will be reviewing one-step equations over the next week and then move on to solving and graphing one-step inequalities. Seventh graders will begin their Geometry unit this week. They will be learning about shapes and angles over the next week.
****If at ANY point you feel you are getting behind, please attend tutoring. Sixth grade tutoring is on Wednesday mornings at 8 and seventh grade tutoring is on Thursday mornings at 8:15. Please let me know if you plan on attending tutoring so I can give you a pass to come to my classroom on those days. Also, make sure you are doing your homework and spending some time on IXL. Practice on IXL should be done on days you do not have written homework from the workbook. Please see me if you need any reminders about IXL. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at [email protected] We have officially started the second nine weeks of school. Sixth graders are right in the middle of their second unit, which involves ratios, rates, and proportions. They should have their next test within the next couple of weeks. Seventh graders are almost finished with their second unit, which is over expressions, equations, and inequalities, and will have their test at the end of next week. Speaking of next week, conferences will be going on October 16th -20th. Students will be dismissed early and then return with their parents for their scheduled conference time. These are student led conferences, so students should go with their parents to their conference. Please make sure you have set up a conference with your homeroom teacher. Emails were sent out last week through Sign Up Genius. If you have not received an email from this program, please let your child's homeroom teacher know immediately! Finally, if your student feels like he or she is falling behind in math, please make sure they attend tutoring on Wednesday mornings at 8:15. Please let Mrs. Sweat know by the end of school on Tuesday if you will be attending tutoring the next day. As always, if you every have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]
